The Family Daughter: A Review

I am excited to review and give away a free copy of a noble book for daughters, The Family Daughter: Becoming Pillars of Strength in our Father’s House.

Written by 18 year old Sarah Bryant, this book presents a most beautiful portrait of a Christ-like, surrendered, peace-filled and joyful daughter, giving her life whole heartedly to the King of Kings and blessing those around her with her loving presence.

The first thing that struck me when I opened this book was its feminine elegance.  Lovely and powerful quotes from the Scriptures as well as the pens of wise and godly saints from history line its pages, each one a gem in and of itself.  Here are two from some of my favorite authors of all time:

We have all of eternity to celebrate the victories won, and only a few short hours before sunset to win them.

Amy Carmichael

You can will to choose for your associates those who are most devout and holy.  You can read books that will stimulate you in your Christian life rather than those that merely amuse. You can use every means of grace appointed by God.  You can will to spend much time in prayer without regard to your frame at the moment.  You can will to prefer a religion of principle to one of mere feeling; in other words, to obey the will of God when no comfortable glow of emotion accompanies your obedience.

Elizabeth Prentiss

Each full and rich chapter is laid out with timeless, holy and beautiful principles from Scripture, testimonies from daughters, and a cream-of-the-crop list of resources, including books, CDs, and DVDs for further study.

There are those who may be tempted to scoff or despair at the idea of attempting to attain to such a high ideal of daughterhood.  But it is precisely because our culture does not strive toward anything remotely close to worthy character, that we fall into such pessimistic thinking.

If we are presented with low and base goals for ourselves, then we will never dream and reach for something beyond that.  It is our Wemmick way.  The Family Daughter will paint for your beloved daughters a glorious picture of true nobility and holiness of character that will inspire and motivate them to see beyond their own sensibilities to something far grander.

It will give them an eternal purpose and meaning that far surpasses the temporal, self-focused, paltry, and peevish outlook that our culture imbibes in our daughters from a very young age.

I am thrilled to give such treasures to my daughters.  For their quiet times, I encourage them to read the Holy Scriptures of the Living God as well as a chapter from such beautiful books as this one.  Little by little, their hearts and minds are being shaped to embrace the higher calling of God upon their lives; and even though they will fail daily in achieving the fulness of all their potential in Christ Jesus, they will have these foundations laid to help them, by God’s grace, to strive toward being the best ambassador of the King possible in whatever sphere of influence God chooses to place them.

The theme of this book is really selfless love.  Deep and abiding love for and in the Savior which spills over into a love for those around us.

The love of Christ is not an absorbing, but a radiating love.  The more we love Him, the more we shall most certainly love others.

Francis Havergal

I highly recommend this book to both mothers and daughters.  It would be a special book to read through together, and would provide gentle and sweet encouragement for the journey into adulthood.
