God’s Call to Young People

On Mondays we are going to start a Book Give Away tradition!  My desire is to help build visionary libraries in the homes of God’s people…and this is one fun way to do it!

This week’s give away is a hard cover copy of God’s Call to Young People: Sermons for the Rising Generation.

Product Description

It was a common practice in Puritan churches (particularly in New England) to preach to the young people of the church and the town on a regular basis. Some churches took every eighth Sunday and devoted it to preaching to the souls of their young people. It is not surprising to find, then, that the average age of conversion in Puritan England and New England was 6, where in our day it is in the late teens. Here are sermons to young people by some eminent preachers of the 17th and 18th centuries. Among those venerable gospel preachers here are Increase Mather, Cotton Mather, Charles Chauncy, and Jonathan Edwards. Perhaps the most notable thing delivered here is that the best way for young people to determine their relationships to God is to have them examine their relationships to their parents.

Here’s how to enter:

1. Leave a comment with your e-mail address (so I know how to contact you if you are the winner!) letting us all know what your favorite book is for teaching children about God.  (Not including the Bible…which is, of course, the BEST.)

2. If you’d like to get another entry, go to our NEW Facebook page and LIKE us!  Facebook is one of the best ways to pass the word about websites you enjoy.  Then leave a second comment letting us know you did that!  Two entries have a better chance of winning than one!

The winner will be announced Wednesday night at 9:00 p.m.   You must live within the U.S. to qualify.

Pass the word!

Favorite book for teaching children about God?

Boy, that’s a tough one! Do I really have to choose only one? It’s somewhat age dependent. “Leading Little Ones to God” is great for the youngest munkins. “The Child’s Story Bible” by Catherine Vos is great for the 4-8 year old crowd (and even older but I’m trying to break this out by ages). Our current favorite, for the later elementary ages is the 2 volume set called “Small Talks on Big Questions”. It uses Biblical stories, scripture, and church history to illustrate the doctrinal truths in the catechism. Parents can effectively educate their children in the fundamentals of Christian doctrine using this set of books.

As Jean mentioned, we also like Catherine Vos’ Children’s Story Bible. We also like Training Hearts, Teaching Minds, by Starr Meade.

  4. Jennifer L. says:

Our favorite has been Leading Little Ones to God. Now that our children are getting a little older we are trying to find some new resources to encourage them.

My email address is . One of our favorites is Big Truths for Little Kids. But now that our kids our older, we too are looking for something new that covers a wider age span, interests the little ones without boring the older kids.
