The holidays definitely shine a spotlight on our pain. I am a firm believer in walking through the pain and lamenting in honest ways to our Father in heaven. There is no value in stuffing down the pain and pretending it doesn’t exist. But God has also offered us helpful advice in Philippians 4:8 – that even as the holidays shine a spotlight on loss, it is good and right for us to move the focus of the spotlight to whatever things are good in our lives. If this Christmas is characterized by pain for you, it’s good to remember the blessings of holidays past. It’s also good to find small moments of joy in little traditions in the present. Instead of feeling guilt over any happiness, God gives you freedom to enjoy the smells, sights, and sounds of Christmas.

Over the years, some of our traditions didn’t stand the test of time for whatever reason and have therefore been tossed. Some however, have remained strong. Our family attempted to go lightly on Christmas for a few years.  We tried to make it serious and sober, filled with Bible verses and hymns, avoiding all that is tinsel and holly.  But when all was said and done, those years were sparse of joy and gladness and purpose.  You see, our purpose was focused on not celebrating too much, rather than on declaring the joys of our risen Savior!

What would have been different if Mary had told the angel “No!  I’m not ready to have a baby. What would people think of me?  I don’t’ want to lose Joseph.  I don’t’ want this grave responsibility – to raise the Son of God to adulthood? No thanks.”

Mary’s refusal would not have thwarted God’s plan.  He would chosen another young virgin who was willing and Jesus would have been born despite Mary’s no. Yet Mary would have missed her calling. She would have missed the opportunity to be a central figure in human history and God’s story.
