The Liberal’s “Dominion Theology”

I’ve been reading up on Dominion Theology for a few years now.  It’s been an incredibly exciting study, and I’d love to blog about it.  What’s been stopping me?

I googled it.

I spent one hour searching for ONE POSITIVE THING on this topic…and all I found were horrific articles written by both atheists and Christians (funny how both sides agree on this issue…something is definitely amiss here, and I find that extremely fascinating…) that smear “Dominion Theology” into the ground.

I was mystified.  I mean, the articles were written by folks who really had NOT studied it at all, so they were writing all kinds of lies and half-truths and hyper exaggerations all couched in frenetic emotional rhetoric.  I did not find one intelligent discussion on it anywhere.

Then the following article came to me in my e-mail in-box.  It came from a completely different angle…and it made a great point.  Every ideology is about having dominion.  The only question is…which ideology’s dominion places Christ where He belongs (He is, after all, the Author and Creator of the universe…does that count for anything?) and results in liberty and justice for the human race?  Which ideology brings about the establishment of true order, civilization, and rational thinking?  Which ideology can be proven by empirical evidence, logic, and rationality?  Which ideology is TRUE?

And that is the crux of it all.

If you believe truth is relative, your answer is the world’s answer.  “No ideology should place itself front and center.  What’s true for you may not be true for me.”  That sounds really sweet and open-hearted and all tolerant and everything.  But it isn’t rational.  If everything is true, nothing is true.  And if nothing is true, then nobody has any right to say that anything someone else does is wrong.  Can you see the chaos that results?   Under this kind of “tolerance”, why should we not allow children to be torn alive limb from limb while they are in their mother’s wombs?  Why not after?  If it suits us? Does it look sweet and loving now?

Dominion Theology was the widely held belief of the Church for 2,000 years.  It was one of those “no-brainers” for the Reformers and the Puritans.  I mention those two groups in particular because they are two of the most intelligent, studious, and influential groups that have risen in the history of the Church.  They studied their Bibles, wrote prolifically, and lived out the Word of God in every facet of life.  They are the founders of the most blessed and free nation in the world.  Really…giants in history.  Perfect?  Of course not, but nevertheless, examples for us to consider as we compare our own modern version of the Christian life to their ardent pursuit of God in all things.

In fact, if you lived during those times and you didn’t believe in the Church triumphant through the unfailing work of the Holy Spirit, you were considered off kilter.  So what happened in the last 100 years to make this historically held and treasured belief an anathema? And what has been the fruit of the last 100 years?  Well, we’re losing our grip on the “most blessed and free nation in the world”, for starters.  I don’t have all the answers, but it is something I’m studying and pondering because I think it deserves a closer look.

This article is excellent…really.  I am so hoping you will all take the time to read it.  Maybe someday I will blog about Dominion Theology and what I’ve been learning.  But in the meantime, let me pass on a little wisdom and perspective from American Vision founder, Gary DeMar.  I’ll post a teaser below, and then you can click on the link underneath to partake of the entire article.  And as always, I ADORE hearing your thoughts.  Inspired?  Leave a comment!

It seems that there are more nutball Leftists than there are grains of sand at Myrtle Beach. One of the kookiest is Michelle Goldberg. Here’s her latest “journalistic” screed: “Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry aren’t just devout — both have deep ties to a fringe fundamentalist movement known as Dominionism, which says Christians should rule the world.” Here’s a little known secret: It’s liberal Dominionists like Michele Goldberg who want to rule the world. She’ll tell you otherwise, but it’s Liberals who use the power of the State to implement their worldview and force everyone to live under their draconian laws. It’s Liberals who want to centralize political power in a national system. It’s Liberals who want to control education, the media, healthcare, financial institutions, oil companies, and business and make us pay for their hair-brained schemes.

I met Miss Goldberg at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church at a creation conference a few years ago. I was one of the speakers. She was there doing research for her book Kingdom Coming: The Rise of Christian Nationalism. Here’s some hyped jargon from the site promoting it:

Journalist Michelle Goldberg has been covering the intersection of politics and ideology for years. Before the 2004 election, and during the ensuing months when many Americans were trying to understand how an administration marked by cronyism, disregard for the national budget, and poorly disguised self-interest had been reinstated, Goldberg traveled through the heartland of a country in the grips of a fevered religious radicalism: the America of our time. From the classroom to the mega-church to the federal court, she saw how the growing influence of dominionism — the doctrine that Christians have the right to rule nonbelievers — is threatening the foundations of democracy.

I’m sure you noticed what I noticed. Change a few words here and there, and you would swear that Miss Goldberg was describing liberalism in general and the Obama administration in particular. You see, dominion is an inescapable concept. Every ideology is about dominion. But unlike the Dominionists on the Left, who want to increase the power of the State, tax the productive into poverty, and remove all limits from government spending, Dominionists on the right want to decrease the power of the State, shrink the onerous tax burden on productive Americans, and force the federal government to live and spend within its constitutional boundaries.

Wonderful post!!!! First time reader sent by Kelly Crawford, and it was worth the click!

I didn’t get to read the link yet as time is fleeting today, but I will get back to it. I have often noticed what one side complains of the most is what interferes the most with their philosophical goals. Of course the left is afraid of us having dominion. Ours is given by God, Jesus Christ and Holy Spirit. Even though they cannot identify that truth, the truth registers deep within. The only way they could ever have complete dominion is for Christians to relinquish it, as dominion is part of the righteousness we gained through Christ.
Their best bet is trying to convince us that we are nuts and should stop trying to force our way on them, you know, so they can force their way on us. Sadly, it has worked the last hundred years.

It is time for the return of the pendulum to the side of Christ!

For the sake of my regular readers, I’m going to post this one derogatory comment by way of illustration. I’ve had several similar comments to this post that I’ve elected not to approve due to their emotive content. Please take note that this comment brings no intelligent, rational discussion to the table of ideas here. It is merely the lashing out of raw emotion and intolerance. As we all know, there are individuals out there who will not invest time in studying issues, thinking through them rationally, and then bringing them to the public arena with maturity and acumen. “Knowledge is dropping from the tongue of the wise; but from the mouth of the foolish comes a stream of foolish words.” Proverbs 15:2

If you are one who enjoys spewing forth folly in fits of frenzy, find another blog, because your efforts to plague my gentle readers will be thwarted here. If you have studied the issue in question and have a sincere desire to bring up rational arguments in a civilized discussion, I’ll be pleased to engage you in one as time permits.

During the last 100 years or so, “the church” has taken on the world’s view of many things. I don’t know much about this yet, but I tend to think that if the modern church has forsaken the idea, it just may be Biblical.

I agree with your point about Dominion Theology (never heard that term before now. I’m just trying to be the best Christian I can). However, I have to disagree with the spirit of the article you presented. It’s very critical and not at all how I would imagine Jesus speaking about someone who disagreed with him. Terms like “Kooky” and “nutball Leftists” only perpetuate the problem. We are to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us.

Yes, I sensed that as well. Because the author had many important points to make, and keeping in mind that God wired men a little differently when it comes to communicating, I felt it possible to extend grace and overlook some of the rhetoric. An older and wiser woman in the Lord once told me, “Even good things will have some chaff in them. You must learn to eat the meat and spit out the bones.” I have found that advice to be most helpful to me when reading anything outside of Scripture, for it is only in the Word of God that we will find pure gold with no chaff attached.

Thank you for your words! My husband and I have been dealing so much with “holiness” and how we are SO blinded in our culture on what that means! We so much want to be led by the spirit and not our flesh! But Western Culture is so contrary to that! We need to go back to the Word as our foundation and quit going on what we have learned growing up in the government’s ways!

Blessings to you and your family!
